Hugo Simberg, The wounded angel, 1903. Haavoittunut enkeli. Sårad ängel. The picture shows two boys carrying an angel on a simple wooden stretcher. The angel, looking very much like a young girl, is visibly wounded. Her head is bandaged and there is blood on one of her wings. You can also see that her strength is waning. Her body is bending over and her hands clinging to the handles of the stretcher, in an effort to remain seated. The two boys, in their plain, shapeless clothes, look very sad. One of them are looking directly at the viewer, is he asking for help? But both boys also look very persistent, they are not going to give up. This little angel IS going to be saved. Another hopeful sign is a bunch of snowdrops that the young angel is holding on to. Snowdrops are symbolic of healing and rebirth. This is a painting people in Finland really love, I hope you like it, too! Digital restoration in January 2022.
