UNESCO WHS Serie - Papahānaumokuākea - Midway Atoll (Kauihelani) - Papahānaumokuākea is a vast and isolated linear cluster of small islands and atolls, roughly 250 km to the northwest of the main Hawaiian Archipelago and extending over 1931 km. The area has deep cosmological and traditional significance for living Native Hawaiian culture, and as the place where it is believed that life originates and to where the spirits return after death. On two of the islands, Nihoa and Makumanamana, there are archaeological remains relating to pre-European settlement and use. Much of the monument is made up of pelagic and deepwater habitats, with notable features such as seamounts and submerged banks, extensive coral reefs and lagoons. Midway Atoll (Kauihelani) is located about 3'200 miles (5'200 km) west of San Francisco, and 2,500 miles (4'100 km) east of Tokyo. The largest island is Sand Island, which has housing and an airstrip. Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, encompassing 590'991 acres (239'166 ha) of land and water in the surrounding area and is part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
