UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Romania Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania - Biserici fortificate din Transilvania - Village of Valea Viilor - These Transylvanian villages with their fortified churches provide a vivid picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The 7 villages inscribed, founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, are characterized by a specific land-use system, settlement pattern and organization of the family farmstead. They are dominated by their fortified churches, built from the 13th to the 16th century. In place of the 14th century initial construction, a new church was built in the 15th century. Around 1500 the ensemble received its present appearance during the fortification phase. The chancel was rebuilt as a tower featuring three brick defence levels and 1,5 m thick walls.
