The Chicago and Northwestern viaduct was designed in 1898 and built by 1900, crossing the Des Moines River between Boone and Ogden. It may be the longest double track railroad viaduct in the world at 2,685 feet in length. The viaduct is 185 feet above the water. The viaduct is also known as the Kate Shelly Bridge in honor of her heroics on another nearby bridge in a previous storm event before this bride was built.
