The young woman portrayed here is Janey, the wife of William Morris. Rossetti fell in love with her and took her wavy hair, pouting lips, and beautiful eyes as inspiration for many of the Pre-Raphaelite femmes fatales of his other works. This portrait depicts her in a day dream, looking off into the distance. On her lap is a book she has been reading and she holds a rose in her left hand. Both the painting and poem were inspired by Tennyson's poem of the same name, "The Daydream".
